What R2 is
R2 is the Responsible Recycling standard for electronics repair and recycling, held by SERI. R2v3 is the current version. Many large companies and trading partners expect it before they will do business with a recycler or ITAD provider.
Certification belongs to your organization and is assessed by an independent certification body. No software can make you certified. Software can make the evidence easier to find, keep complete, and produce when an auditor asks.
Downstream vendor records
Finding a qualified downstream vendor is only the first step. You need to know what each vendor accepts and how it processes that material, keep the supporting documents, and notice when they expire.
That information is most useful when it sits next to your outbound records. If a shipment goes to a vendor, your team should be able to see who the vendor is and what supports using them.
Material flows and mass balance
Auditors want to see how material moves through your business. A mass balance compares what you received with what you shipped, processed, or still hold, and it shows where each stream went.
That is difficult to reconstruct at audit time. It becomes much easier when weights are recorded at receiving, processing outputs are recorded as work happens, and outbound shipments are tied to a downstream vendor.
Chain of custody for each device
For serialized equipment, you should be able to show what happened to one device from start to finish: when it was received, what was done to it, and where it went.
RazorERP builds that history as work happens, with events recorded against the asset. Read more about how chain of custody works, and why it should not depend on a report assembled later.
Data sanitization evidence
Devices with data need evidence that the data was dealt with. Keep erasure or destruction records with the device they belong to, along with any verification your process requires.
The current NIST guidance, SP 800-88 Rev. 2, was published in September 2025. If your procedures still refer to an earlier revision, ask your certification body or consultant what needs to change.
Preparing for an audit
Ask your auditor or consultant which records they expect, then test whether your team can produce each one. Pick a device and a shipment at random and try to trace them. Where the answer takes more than a few minutes, you have found something to improve.
