Data migration
Move what you need, verified before go-live.
Migration is planned record by record: what moves, what is archived, and how it is reconciled before cutover. Which history moves is agreed in discovery.
Preparation checklist
- List every system and spreadsheet that holds operational data
- Decide which records are open (must move) and which are history
- Agree what happens to history: migrate, archive, or keep read-only
- Clean customer, vendor, and item lists before extraction
- Freeze grading definitions and location naming
- Name an owner for validation in each team
Typical scope to discuss
| Record | Typical source | Question to settle |
|---|---|---|
| Customers & vendors | Current ERP or accounting | Which system owns them after go-live? |
| Open inventory | Current ERP or spreadsheets | Are serials, grades, and locations complete? |
| Open jobs & orders | Current ERP | Finish in the old system or move? |
| Contracts | Documents or spreadsheets | Which terms must be modeled? |
| Historical records | Current ERP | Migrate, archive, or keep read-only? |
